ChatGPT vs Gemini is OpenAI versus Google. ChatGPT is a separate account built around chat, images, and Codex. Gemini is Google’s assistant, and the paid plans are also a bundle: Gmail, Docs, Drive storage, Flow video credits, and, on higher tiers, Gemini 4 Argon.

Pick Gemini when your work already lives in Google. Pick ChatGPT when you want Codex, custom GPTs, and OpenAI’s model stack without a Google account. Prices and model access change by country. The figures below are from Google’s US subscriptions page and OpenAI’s public ChatGPT and Codex pages as of 22 October 2026.

What Each Product Is

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s consumer app. A full comparison with Anthropic’s assistant is in ChatGPT vs Claude. The model people mean by “the expensive one” is GPT-6 Astra.

Gemini is Google’s assistant in the Gemini app, Chrome, and, on paid plans, inside Gmail, Docs, and other Google apps. Google AI Pro and Ultra list Gemini 4 Argon. Free uses Flash-Lite. Google AI Plus uses Flash and higher limits than Free, not Argon.

Gemini is not a thin skin on Search. Search has its own AI mode. The subscription is what raises model access, Deep Research, video tools, and storage.

Plans

From Google’s US subscriptions page:

PlanWhat you are paying for
FreeFlash-Lite, image editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems, 15 GB of Google storage
Google AI PlusFlash model, about 2x Free usage, video generation, Daily Brief, 200 Flow credits, 400 GB storage, Gemini in Gmail and Vids
Google AI ProGemini 4 Argon, about 4x Free usage, 1,000 Flow credits, 5 TB storage, Jules, Antigravity entry limits, YouTube Premium Lite, Gemini in Docs and Chrome
Google AI UltraHighest Argon access. $99.99/month for 5x Pro usage, or $199.99/month for 20x. Flow credits of 10,000 or 25,000. Storage from 20 TB. Full YouTube Premium in eligible countries

Google’s usage meter is compute-based. It refreshes about every five hours until a weekly cap. A long file and a short question do not cost the same “message.”

ChatGPT’s public ladder is Free, a lower paid Go tier, Plus at $20/month, and Pro from $100/month. Codex is included at every tier, with tight limits on Free. Plus is the plan most people compare with Google AI Pro. Ultra’s $99.99 tier is the closer money match to ChatGPT Pro, and it buys Google bundle items ChatGPT does not sell (Drive storage, YouTube).

Confirm Plus and Pro dollar amounts on gemini.google/subscriptions. Google’s own page states the Ultra prices above. Availability is 18+ and not in every country.

Writing, Research, and Google Apps

Inside Google. Paid Gemini can draft in Gmail and Docs and use the files already in Drive. That is the feature ChatGPT cannot match unless you upload copies. If the brief is “reply to this thread in Gmail,” Gemini is the shorter path.

Long research. Both advertise deep research over many sources. Gemini’s marketing claim is hundreds of sources for a report. ChatGPT Plus expands deep research inside ChatGPT. For a cited answer as the whole product, see ChatGPT vs Perplexity.

Images and video. Gemini plans add Flow credits and, on higher tiers, more video generation. ChatGPT includes image generation, with higher limits on paid plans. If video in Google’s studio is the job, you are buying Gemini. If a chat image is the job, ChatGPT is enough.

Writing you will send. Either model can draft. Edit the facts yourself, or draft in Write with AI when you do not want the text tied to a Google or OpenAI workspace.

Gemini’s subscriptions page still mentions older “3.1 Pro” wording in some help answers next to Gemini 4 Argon on the plan cards. Trust the plan card for what a new subscription unlocks, then look at the model picker in the app.

Coding

ChatGPT’s coding agent is Codex: repo edits, a CLI, and an app on paid desktop plans. Limits are published as ranges by model. Details are in the Claude vs ChatGPT coding section.

Gemini’s coding extras on Pro and Ultra are Jules (an asynchronous coding agent, in beta, English, 18+) and Google Antigravity. They are not the same thing as Codex, and they are not included on the Free Gemini plan in the way Codex’s limited trial is included on free ChatGPT.

Use Codex if you want one coding agent next to everyday ChatGPT. Use Jules or Antigravity if you already pay for Google AI and want Google’s agent on the repo. Do not buy Ultra only for coding if you will not use the storage and YouTube bundle.

Which One to Use

  • Gemini if you live in Gmail, Docs, and Drive, or you want Argon plus a large storage upgrade.
  • ChatGPT if you want Codex, custom GPTs, and OpenAI models without moving your files into Google.
  • Both only if one subscription’s cap is what stops you. Most people do not need Plus and Google AI Pro at the same time.
  • Claude instead if the real comparison is writing and Claude Code. That matchup is ChatGPT vs Claude.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, ChatGPT or Gemini?

Gemini is better when the work is already in Google’s apps and storage. ChatGPT is better when you want Codex and OpenAI’s other tools in one account. The free tiers are both fine for short questions.

Is Gemini 4 Argon on the free plan?

No. Google’s subscriptions page puts Flash-Lite on Free, Flash on AI Plus, and Gemini 4 Argon on AI Pro and AI Ultra.

How much is Google AI Ultra?

In the US, Google lists $99.99/month for 5x Pro usage and $199.99/month for 20x. Lower tiers cost less. Check the subscriptions page for Plus and Pro in your country.

Does Gemini include a coding agent?

Google AI Pro and Ultra include higher limits for Jules and access to Google Antigravity. ChatGPT includes Codex, with a limited trial on Free.

Is Gemini the same as Google Search’s AI?

No. Gemini is the assistant app and the Workspace features on paid plans. AI answers inside Search are a separate surface, even when they use a Gemini model.

ChatGPT Plus or Google AI Pro?

Plus is the $20 ChatGPT plan with expanded Codex and chat. Google AI Pro is the tier that unlocks Gemini 4 Argon, 5 TB, and Gemini inside more Google apps. Buy the one that matches where your files already are.

Can Gemini replace ChatGPT for writing?

It can draft email and docs, especially inside Gmail and Docs. It does not replace ChatGPT if your workflow is custom GPTs, Codex, and OpenAI’s image tools.

Conclusion

ChatGPT vs Gemini is a bundle choice. Google sells Argon together with storage, Gmail, and video credits. OpenAI sells chat, images, and Codex. Use the product that sits on top of the files you already have, and open the other only when you hit a limit.
